Fast-track no longer applies

Fast-track for households with a specified child or young person in the custody of Oranga Tamariki or in an approved permanent care arrangement will end, unless there is another child or young person who meets fast-track criteria, when:

  • the child or young person in care leaves the household or if the child is not already in their care will not be placed with the household
  • the custody arrangement with Oranga Tamariki ends, unless the caregiver is granted Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit for the child or young person
  • the Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit is cancelled, including when the caregiver cancels the Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit and includes the child or young person in their main benefit
  • the child or young person dies
  • the child or young person turns 18, unless the Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit for the child or young person is continuing while they are continuing in education and are not financially independent

A household may still qualify to remain on the social housing register if they are no longer fast-tracked.

Child or young person leaves care unexpectedly

When the child or young person has left care unexpectedly and Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit continues being paid for 28 days, fast-track ends when the child or young person leaves care and does not continue for the additional 28 days.
