Income Related Rent : Contents

Introduction

Income Related Rent is a subsidised rent scheme for social housing tenants with low incomes.

Social housing providers include Kāinga Ora and approved community housing providers.

MSD calculates the rate of Income Related Rent and the social housing provider charges this rate as rent to the client.

The rate of Income Related Rent is calculated based on a client's assessable income, additional occupant contributions and their household type.

If the rate of Income Related Rent calculated is higher than the market rent rate for the property, the housing provider will charge the client the market rent rate.

Social housing providers are housing providers, which include Housing New Zealand and community housing providers.

Community housing providers are approved, registered and regulated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

A social housing provider can provide properties for tenants who are eligible for social housing and for subsided rent through Income Related Rent.
