Client goes into residential care

If a client on a register goes into residential care, you will need to establish if the admission is permanent or for a short duration.

Short-term care

Clients on the register who enter into short-term residential care will remain on the register for referrals to housing providers if they are available for referral or have an agent or someone to act on their behalf with their housing provider.

Note although a client may want an agent or someone to act on their behalf for referral, some social housing providers may choose not to deal with anyone other than the client. You will need to advise clients in such situations to make a separate arrangement with the housing provider to allow for someone to act on their behalf.

Long-term care

Clients going into long-term residential care would no longer have a housing need and would be removed from the register.

Joint application

If the client going into residential care permanently is a part of a joint application, the application must be reviewed based on the housing need of the remaining applicants to determine their eligibility for social housing along with their indicative rate of Income Related Rent. The remaining applicants must be invited to apply.
