Approved training

In a situation where a young person cannot return to secondary education, the next appropriate activity to consider is approved training.

For youth activity obligations purposes approved training is defined as employment-related training.

Generally they should be working towards a NCEA level 2 qualification or an equivalent or higher qualification.

Approved training must:

  • be reputable and likely to teach the young person skills that will help them find work
  • have an emphasis on training rather than study
  • offer full-time training (at least 30 hours per week) and
  • offer NCEA or New Zealand Qualification Framework (NZQF) credits

When advising a young person of approved training you need to consider their future goals and aspirations. You should try and match types of training that would be suitable for the young person and their career path.

A young person in full-time approved training must:

  • regularly attend the programme
  • complete assignments and
  • complete other course requirements
