Secondary education

Participating in secondary education is the preferred way for a young person receiving Young Parent Payment to meet their activity obligation of being in or available for full-time secondary or tertiary education, approved training or work-based learning.

Generally they should be working towards a NCEA level 2 qualification or an equivalent or higher qualification.

A young person enrolled in secondary education (including composite schools, correspondence schools, and secondary schools) must:

  • regularly attend classes
  • compete assignments and
  • complete other course requirements

School holidays

Young people intending to return to secondary education in the next academic year can be paid Young Parent Payment during the summer holidays. Any incentive payments earned will continue over this period also.

Note you may also require a young person to undertake other activities that work towards NCEA level 2 or equivalent or higher qualifications during the summer holidays.

Incentive payments

Young people receiving Young Parent Payment can earn incentive payments for education and budgeting obligations if they meet certain criteria.
