In or available for secondary education
A young person can receive Young Parent Payment if they are enrolled in or available for a full-time course of secondary education, and meet the other qualifications. Secondary education includes composite schools, correspondence schools, and secondary school.
Generally they will be working towards a NCEA level 2 qualification or an equivalent or higher qualification.
Young people in secondary education do not qualify for the Young Parent Payment if they have moved from their parents' home to improve their educational prospects, for example if they have moved to another town to a more prestigious school.
While in school and receiving Young Parent Payment, the young person has activity obligations, including regularly attending classes and completing assignments. For more information see:
- Obligations
- Obligations Secondary education
In SWIFTT the Young Parent Payment activity should be recorded as 'Enrolled in Secondary Education'. The payment will automatically expire at the end of the school year. At this time you should reassess the Young Parent Payment, for example, check with the young person if they are intending to return to school.
School holidays
Young people intending to return to secondary education in the next academic year can be paid Young Parent Payment during the summer holidays. Any incentive payments earned will continue to be paid over this period.
Note a service provider or Work and Income "in-house" service may require a young person to undertake other activities that work towards NCEA level 2 or equivalent or higher qualifications during the summer break.
