Number of people relocating

If a client has immediate family, the rate of Relocate for Work Support they can get for travel is based on who is actually moving with them. This does not mean the whole family has to move at the same time. If some family members are moving at a later date, the amount paid must include them.

Note clients are required to move within 28 calendar days of getting Relocate for Work Support, but this requirement does not apply to their immediate family.

Example 1

Joy is applying for Relocate for Work Support and meets all the qualifications. She is moving from Carterton to New Plymouth.

However, Joy's husband and son will not be moving with her, as they want to stay in Carterton to be closer to extended family who can help support their son.

As Joy's immediate family are not moving with her, MSD approves her Relocate for Work Support application at the rate for a single client.

Example 2

Kahu has a partner and one daughter. He is applying for Relocate for Work Support and meets all the qualifications. He has been offered a full-time job in Christchurch and will be moving from Picton.

Kahu's daughter is in primary school. Since it is mid-term, Kahu's partner and daughter will stay in Picton till the end of the school term and then move down to Christchurch to be with Kahu.

As Kahu's immediate family will be moving with him (even though they are not moving at the same time) MSD approves his Relocate for Work Support application at the rate for a couple with a dependent child.
