Change in age
A child's age may affect:
- the rate of Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit payable to the caregiver and
- the rate of Clothing Allowance for Orphans and Unsupported children payable and
- whether the child is still a dependent child
Note a change in a child's age may affect a caregiver's obligations (and those of their partner if they have one). This depends on what other financial assistance they are getting and the obligations that apply.
Child is not dependent
A child is not a dependent child if they are:
Note generally a child is still a dependent child when they start part-time employment
- getting a basic Student Allowance or an Independent Circumstances Allowance
Note getting a Student Loan does not always mean a child is financially independent
Child turns 18
When a dependent child turns 18, Orphan's Benefit or Unsupported Child's Benefit can no longer be paid for them unless they are continuing in education and are not financially independent.
