Medical criteria for person who requires care
For a client to qualify for Emergency Benefit as they are caring for a person, the person must require full-time care and attention at home and without that care the person would need:
- hospital care
- rest home care
- residential disability care
- care of the kind referred to in section 141 of the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, which is extended care services provided for severely disabled children and young persons or
- care of an equivalent kind
For more information see:

At home
The home of the person requiring care may be the home of the client or the person. It is not expected that a caregiver live in the same house as the person who requires care.
District Health Board assistance
The person who requires care may be able to receive assistance from the District Health Board that will allow the client caring for the person to earn a sufficient livelihood. Consider each case on its merits.
For more information see:
Person requiring care contributing to the cost of care
When the client is caring for the person in the home of the person requiring care, the person's financial circumstances must be assessed to determine if they can contribute to their own care.
Note this does not apply when a person is caring for their New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension partner.
