Rate of payment

The rate of New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension paid overseas is based on the number of months the client resided in New Zealand between the ages of 20 and 65.

  • if a client has resided in New Zealand continuously between the ages of 20 and 65 they will receive 100% of their New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension entitlement
  • if they have resided in New Zealand for less than 540 months (or 45 years) between the ages of 20 and 65 they will be paid a proportionate amount

Clients can get up to 100% of the gross rate of either the half married, civil union or de facto rate, or the single sharing accommodation rate, depending on the client's relationship status.

The grandparented non-qualified partner rate is not payable outside New Zealand.

Overseas pensions will not be deducted from a client's payments unless they are grandparented at the 50% fixed rate of payment overseas.

General Portability payments are made at a gross rate. This means they are not taxed in New Zealand.

If a person going overseas is not sure whether they will need to pay New Zealand tax while they are overseas, they should check with Inland Revenue in New Zealand.

Veteran's Pension recipients under the age of 65 will have an income test applied.

Note single living alone rate, grandparented non-qualified partner payments, and Extra help are not payable to a client getting General Portability. The rate of New Zealand Superannuation will be paid at the single sharing accommodation rate and the supplementary payments will be cancelled.
