Young Parent Payment : Contents

Third party application for funds

A third party can only make an application for the remaining money on a payment card if they have the power to act for the young person. This could be their appointed agent, or the executor of their estate if the young person has died.

The Ministry of Social Development must be sure that a third party has the appropriate authority to act on behalf of the young person.

Young person has died

When a young person dies, the executor of their estate may apply for the money left on the payment card, if there is no executor of their estate, their next of kin can apply.

Note any money left on the payment card that has been paid out to the young person's estate will generally be part of the assessable estate when assessing qualifications for a Funeral Grant. Funds that remain on the payment card are generally impractical to realise and therefore may be excluded from the assessable estate.
