Medical certificates for live organ donors

A client must provide a medical certificate as evidence they have been accepted as a live organ donor for the retrieval of a kidney or liver tissue.

The medical certificate must be signed by a registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner.

Note MSD can accept any medical certificate or letter from the client’s registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner. Evidence does not have to be a Work Capacity Medical Certificate.

Twelve weeks maximum medical coverage

The maximum period an Emergency Benefit can be paid for recovery following the donation of a kidney or liver tissue is 12 weeks.

The first medical certificate coverage can be the lesser of either:

  • the period specified by the registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner or
  • 12 weeks

If the first medical certificate is for less than 12 weeks and the client still requires financial assistance during their recovery time, the client must get another medical certificate for their Emergency Benefit to continue.

The medical certificate may be extended up to the maximum of 12 weeks from the date of surgery by a registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner.
