Hospitalisation

When a client is admitted to hospital, their New Zealand Superannuation can continue at the existing rate for the first 13 weeks.

The rate will need to be reduced to the hospital rate of payment after the client has been in hospital for more than 13 weeks (not after receiving New Zealand Superannuation for 13 weeks).

Exception

Couples with a dependent child do not have their New Zealand Superannuation payment reduced regardless of how long they are in hospital.

Note if a client (or partner) is getting Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit for a child in their care, this is regarded as a dependent child.

Hospital rate

The hospital rate payment allows for the cost of personal items, which patients are expected to provide for themselves. The net weekly hospital rate is $58.34 as at 1 April 2026.

An amount above the hospital rate can be paid where there are financial circumstances to warrant paying at a higher rate.

Note MSD cannot pay an amount less than the hospital rate.

Client in hospital during Mandatory Review

Generally, clients must respond to the Mandatory Review before their review date, or their payments will suspend.

Only clients getting New Zealand Superannuation with a grandparented non-qualified partner included have a Mandatory Review for their New Zealand Superannuation.

All New Zealand Superannuation clients getting Accommodation Supplement or Disability Allowance have a Mandatory Review for this assistance.

When a client is in hospital (for 13 weeks or less) and needs more time to respond to the review, they may be able to get an extension. If a client is unable to respond to the Mandatory Review, they may be able to get an exemption.

A client must contact MSD before their review date to discuss their situation if they need an extension or exemption.

Note clients who are in hospital for more than 13 weeks do not have a Mandatory Review.
