Change in need for social housing

When a client applies for social housing, their circumstances are assessed through the Social Allocation System (SAS) to determine their housing need.

When the client is placed into social housing, their need to move may be resolved. However, the client may still be unable to afford, access and sustain alternative housing (e.g. private rent) so will still have a need for social housing.

Where the client has a change in circumstances affecting the reason why they need housing e.g., health or disability reasons, discrimination, high debt etc, you will need to:

  • decide whether the change affects the rate of Income Related Rent
  • review the rate of Income Related Rent if required
  • record the change in the system

Where there are changes to the client's Income Related Rent or an applicant's priority on the social housing register see:

The client's continued eligibility for social housing will be reviewed when the client is selected for tenancy review.
