Backdating Income Related Rent - application

You may consider backdating a client's application for Income Related Rent to an earlier date when you get information at a later date.

You need to be satisfied that all necessary information has been received and it is correct.

You may backdate to any date between the date of the earlier incomplete application and the date the full and correct information is received.

Example

Maria was placed into a property on 8 October 2022, her application for Income Related Rent was incomplete, and Kāinga Ora charged the market rent for the property. Maria provides information on 5 November 2022 but the information is only full and correct from 22 October 2022.

In this situation the Income Related Rent should be backdated to 22 October 2022 as that is the earliest date that it can be properly calculated from.

You may consider backdating an application for Income Related Rent to an earlier date (when a client never made an earlier application) if you are satisfied that:

• all necessary information to calculate the Income Related Rent as at that earlier date has been received and
• the information is correct and
• it was unreasonable in the circumstances to expect the application to have been made earlier
