New Zealand Superannuitants going to or residing in Jersey/Guernsey

Under the agreement with Jersey/Guernsey a client can be paid New Zealand Superannuation when they are living in Jersey/Guernsey.

Clients can apply for New Zealand Superannuation to be paid in Jersey/Guernsey before their departure from New Zealand or from Jersey/Guernsey.

To get New Zealand Superannuation paid in Jersey/Guernsey, a client must:

  • intend to live in Jersey/Guernsey for more than 26 weeks and
  • have had at least 12 months residence in New Zealand since age 20

Note the client can use their own and/or their partner's (or former partner's) periods of insurance in Jersey/Guernsey since the age of 20 to meet the residence qualification for New Zealand Superannuation.

Partners

If the client has a partner the partner must complete an application form and establish entitlement in their own right. If one partner is ineligible there is no provision to pay for a grandparented non-qualified partner overseas.

Intending to live in Jersey/Guernsey

If a client leaves New Zealand intending to live in Jersey/Guernsey for 26 weeks or more, they have up to 26 weeks to take up residence in Jersey/Guernsey. Clients may go to other countries before they get to Jersey/Guernsey, but they must arrive in Jersey/Guernsey within 26 weeks from the date they left New Zealand to be considered ordinarily resident in Jersey/Guernsey on the date they left New Zealand.

Example

A client may want to have a three-month holiday in the United Kingdom before taking up residence in Jersey/Guernsey.

In this example, the client would be considered ordinarily resident in Jersey/Guernsey for the purposes of deciding their application for payment of New Zealand Superannuation in Jersey/Guernsey.

Change in circumstances

Clients have an obligation to advise MSD of any changes in their circumstances that may affect their entitlement to New Zealand Superannuation in Jersey/Guernsey or the rate payable (e.g. if they intend to leave Jersey/Guernsey to live in another country).

Mandatory Reviews

Clients getting New Zealand Superannuation in Jersey/Guernsey will need to complete a Mandatory Review 52 weeks from when the benefit commenced, and 52 weeks from when the client's last Mandatory Review was completed.
