Earning the right to receive payment directly
Young people who are subject to youth money management can earn the right to have their Young Parent Payment, incentives, Family Tax Credit and any Extra Help paid directly to them.
The young person can gain control of their payment if:
- they have demonstrated continued compliance with their obligations and
- their service provider or Work and Income "in-house" service considers that they are financially competent
A young person who has earned control over their payment has the choice to have their benefit paid directly to them and they will be responsible for paying their costs.
Young people who are married, in a civil union or de facto relationship
For young people who are married, in a civil union or de facto relationship, both young people must meet the criteria in order for each of them to manage their own payment.
Young people aged 20 years
Young people who have turned 20 years old and have chosen to stay on Young Parent Payment to complete their course of study, training or work-based learning, can opt out of youth money management (unless they are subject to a sanction). This applies even if they haven't been getting Young Parent Payment long enough to earn all their incentive payments.
