Clients who can take part

The option of taking part in a Sustainable Employment Trial is available to any Supported Living Payment client whose benefit will be affected if they regularly work 15 hours or more.

The job must be in open employment, and be more than 15 hours per week. If the employment is for less than 15 hours a week it is not necessary for the client to take part in a Sustainable Employment Trial, as this is allowed under the Supported Living Payment qualifications.

Clients who can take part in a Sustainable Employment Trial include those who are self employed.

There is no restriction on how soon after being granted the Supported Living Payment a client can take part in a Sustainable Employment Trial. For some clients, this may be some time after grant; for others it may be sooner.

The Sustainable Employment Trial does not apply to Supported Living Payment clients if:

  • they are not regularly working 15 hours or more per week

their employment does not affect their qualification

  • the employment is of a particularly short-term nature
  • they are receiving Supported Living Payment on the grounds of being totally blind

(these clients can already regularly work 15 hours or more without losing their entitlement to Supported Living Payment)

  • their job is in sheltered employment

if they move into a job in open employment, they can request to take part in a Sustainable Employment Trial

  • the position is unpaid (for example voluntary work or work experience)

Note you can only agree to a client's request to take part in a Sustainable Employment Trial once they have a job or a firm offer of employment. However, where appropriate you should still discuss the Sustainable Employment Trial process with the client and invite them to look for employment.
